University of Sydney has been awarded $18.4 million AUD ($12 million USD) by the Australian Government to establish Quantum Australia, a national center for quantum innovation and collaboration. This initiative aims to bolster Australia’s position in quantum research and technology, leveraging the country’s strong presence in quantum research and computing patents. Led by the University of Sydney, Quantum Australia will facilitate collaboration between industry and academia, promote the growth of quantum startups, and enhance Australia’s quantum workforce. The center will focus on advancing quantum computing, which holds the potential to revolutionize various fields such as materials science, chemistry, pharmaceuticals, and cryptography.
Professor Stephen Bartlett, the director of the University of Sydney Nano Institute, spearheaded the formation of Quantum Australia. The center will operate in partnership with leading research institutions, industry players, and quantum companies both domestically and internationally. The establishment of Quantum Australia aligns with the objectives outlined in the National Quantum Strategy, reflecting Australia’s commitment to capitalizing on quantum technology opportunities.
