TELUS has partnered with Photonic Inc., a British Columbia-based company, to develop next-generation quantum communications. This collaboration provides Photonic with dedicated access to a 30-kilometre fibre-optic network in British Columbia, enabling the testing of quantum technologies aimed at enhancing secure communication for industries such as finance, security, and logistics.
The dedicated fibre network will facilitate the testing of complex quantum networking applications, including quantum encryption for secure information transfer over long distances. This infrastructure supports Photonic’s efforts in quantum computing, quantum key distribution, and other technologies critical for digital security.
This initiative marks the first time a Canadian startup has been granted access to a major telecom operator’s network for developing quantum communication capabilities. Photonic recently achieved milestones such as demonstrating entanglement distribution in a commercial setting, which is essential for scaling quantum networks.
The collaboration positions Canada to address the challenges posed by emerging quantum technologies and ensures that businesses are prepared for a future that requires enhanced security measures. For more information, refer to the TELUS’s press release here.
