IonQ has signed a flagship distributor agreement with Toyota Tsusho Corporation, marking its formal entry into Japan’s quantum technology market. As a key member of the Toyota Group, Toyota Tsusho will promote IonQ’s trapped-ion quantum computing systems across a range of industries, leveraging its deep business development networks and decades of experience in scaling new technologies within Japan. The partnership has already yielded a local commercial agreement and aims to unlock growth opportunities in a national quantum ecosystem projected to reach $1–2 trillion globally by 2035.
The collaboration will focus on bringing IonQ’s Forte systems and networking technologies to Japanese enterprises seeking to future-proof their operations with quantum capabilities. Toyota Tsusho has previously engaged in quantum R&D and views this partnership as a step toward immediate commercial deployment. The initiative reflects broader efforts to integrate quantum computing into high-priority sectors such as logistics, manufacturing, and energy. IonQ’s technology is designed for scalable applications, with current systems offering 36 algorithmic qubits and access via all major cloud platforms.
This announcement is part of IonQ’s global expansion strategy, following major milestones including the launch of a manufacturing facility in the U.S., deployment of its first quantum system in Europe via QuantumBasel, and memoranda of understanding with AIST G-QuAT and the city of Busan, South Korea. The agreement with Toyota Tsusho complements ongoing work in the Asia-Pacific region, including partnerships with Hyundai Motors, Sungkyunkwan University, and Seoul National University, reinforcing IonQ’s position as a global leader in enterprise-grade quantum computing.
