P33 and the National Quantum Algorithm Center (NQAC) have launched the Grand Challenges program, an initiative to support postdoctoral researchers developing industry-relevant quantum applications in Illinois. The program begins with two $125,000 awards and is designed to accelerate breakthroughs in quantum algorithm research.
The program requires a three-way collaboration for each proposal: an Illinois-based academic institution, a quantum hardware or software company, and an industry partner from sectors such as finance, materials science, or energy. Academic partners and quantum companies must have established relationships with the Illinois Quantum and Microelectronics Park (IQMP).
The NQAC, housed at IQMP, is a core component of Illinois’s quantum strategy, bringing together end-users, quantum companies, academia, and national labs to advance quantum algorithms and applications. Brad Henderson, CEO at P33, noted that the program is intended to foster an alliance that builds a pathway for innovation as Illinois continues to lead the quantum revolution.
The initiative aims to give postdoctoral researchers hands-on experience translating quantum discoveries into practical solutions for complex challenges in finance, materials science, and energy. The launch follows the groundbreaking for anchor tenant PsiQuantum’s facility at IQMP.
