Podcast with Meredith Fore of the Chicago Quantum Exchange

2024-12-28T14:44:58-08:00

The US has 10 federal quantum research centers and four of them are in or near Chicago (California has only two). That’s only one reason the city was named a U.S. Regional and Innovation Technology Hub for quantum tech. Science writer Meredith Fore covers the quantum scene including national labs, universities and startups for the Chicago Quantum Exchange. She shares stories of scientists and technical advances in the region. Transcript [00:00:00] Veronica: Hello, and welcome to the Quantum Spin by HKA. I'm Veronica Combs. I'm a writer and an editor here at the agency. I get to talk every day with [...]

Quantum Circuits Secures $26.5 Million in Series B Funding

2024-12-28T14:44:59-08:00

Quantum Circuits Inc. has quietly raised $26.5 million in Series B funding led by Sequoia Capital Partners with additional participation from others. This brings their total funding to $84 million since the New Haven, Connecticut based company was founded in 2015. The company was founded by leading quantum scientists from Yale University and is pursuing a modular, superconducting based processor with error correction. The company is currently testing its technology and plans to start offering its quantum capabilities via a cloud service. In the past, they have been listed as one of the future partners for Microsoft Azure Quantum's cloud service. [...]

Shall you buy a Quantum Computer TODAY? – Analysis of QC On-premise Deployments

2024-12-28T14:45:00-08:00

By Michael Baczyk On-Premise Deployments on the Rise The past month alone has seen several significant deals that showcase the increasing adoption of on-premise quantum computers. IBM announced that the Japanese research institute Riken has chosen to install an IBM Quantum System Two processor at its facility, which will be integrated with Riken's Fugaku supercomputer. The project has attracted funding from Japan's New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO) and will involve collaborators such as SoftBank, the University of Tokyo, and Osaka University. Meanwhile, QuEra Computing secured a substantial order worth 6.5 billion yen ($41M USD) from Japan's National Institute [...]

Terra Quantum Demonstrates QKD Over a 1707 Km (1060 Mile) Fiber Optic Cable

2024-12-28T14:45:00-08:00

Diagram of the Setup Terra Quantum Used in this Experiment. Credit: Terra Quantum One of the current issues with Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) is the limitation of how far a quantum signal can be carried over a lossy fiber optic cable before it becomes unusable. With classical optical networking, this problem is solved using classical repeater technology that measures an incoming optical stream and then regenerates it to send it on to the next link in the chain. However, the approach used in these classical repeaters won't work with a quantum signal because of the No-cloning theorem. Nonetheless, people are testing [...]

IQM’s 20 Qubit Garnet Processor Goes Live on Amazon Braket

2024-12-28T14:45:02-08:00

IQM Quantum Computers (IQM) has announced that their 20 qubit Garnet quantum processor is now available to end users on the Amazon Braket service. This processor has a square lattice topology using tunable couplers and has a medium 2-qubit gate fidelity of 99.51% with a single pair hitting 99.8%. This processor joins others available on Amazon Braket including from IonQ, Oxford Quantum Circuits (OQC), QuEra, and Rigetti. It will be the first AWS processor hosted in the European Union. (OQC is located in the UK which is in Europe, but the UK is no longer part of the European Union). The [...]

Credit: AWS There have been a number of quantum networking testbeds created over the past few years (see our article listing them here), but Harvard University and the Amazon Web Services Center for Quantum Networking (AWS CQN) have created one with a new twist. A key technology that several quantum communications researchers are working to develop is called a Quantum Memory. This is a device that can receive a qubit and hold it for an extended period of time for use in the future. What Harvard and AWS CQN have create [...]

IBM Announces that Qiskit Has Come of Age with the Qiskit 1.0 Release

2024-12-28T14:45:11-08:00

Qiskit Overview. Credit: IBM In the world of software, there is a concept known as Semantic Versioning to indicate the version number of the software that can indicate both the maturity of the software and the level of changes in the software when a new version is released. Typically, version labelled 0.xxx are known as early software, possible in a beta stage, that can be expected to see significant updates before it becomes a stable and released product. So, it is a big deal when a software product moves from 0.xxx to a 1.0 level which indicates the software at a [...]
