2026-03-17T13:19:28-07:00

Many countries are seeking to be amongst the leaders in developing and utilizing quantum technology to benefit the lives of their citizens. And the United Kingdom is no exception. Recently, Labour Tech and the YIMBY Initiative published a report including contributions from 11 quantum experts, including GQI's own Dr. Joe Spencer that outlines an urgent, mission-led strategy to secure the UK’s global leadership in quantum technologies. It emphasizes that quantum computing is no longer speculative science but a geopolitical, economic, and security imperative. The UK, despite its strong academic foundations and early investments, is at risk of becoming a “research lab [...]

Purdue, ORNL, and Toshiba Demonstrate Quantum Secure Communications in Digital Nuclear Reactor Using QKD

2026-03-17T13:19:29-07:00

Purdue University, in partnership with the U.S. Department of Energy’s Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) and Toshiba, has successfully demonstrated quantum secure communications in a live nuclear reactor environment. The trial, conducted at Purdue University Reactor Number One (PUR-1), utilized Toshiba’s Long Distance Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) technology to secure digital data streams within the reactor, marking a milestone in quantum cybersecurity integration for nuclear energy systems. The three-year project, funded by the DOE’s Nuclear Energy University Program, focused on validating QKD's suitability for safeguarding microreactor communications. QKD uses quantum mechanical principles—specifically, the no-cloning theorem and measurement disturbance—to distribute encryption keys [...]
