HRL Laboratories, LLC, in collaboration with UCLA researcher Jason Petta, has secured a grant from the Army Research Office and the Laboratory for Physical Sciences (LPS) to advance silicon-based quantum processors. The project, named Universal Control of Scaled Spin Systems (UCS3), aims to bring spin qubits, a promising next-generation quantum computing element, to a functional multi-qubit array. By embedding cutting-edge quantum science technology onto silicon chips, the team seeks to leverage existing semiconductor infrastructure for scalable quantum computing, mirroring the transformative impact of transistors on conventional electronics in the 1940s. The partnership combines HRL’s industrial wafer fabrication capabilities with UCLA’s academic research agility to enable unprecedented quantum measurements on single electron spin qubits. The UCS3 grant builds on initiatives to expand quantum science research in the Los Angeles area, fostering collaboration between academia and industry.
