Jij Inc., a quantum optimization startup based in Tokyo, and ORCA Computing, a UK-based photonic quantum computing company, have formed a strategic partnership to foster advancements in quantum computing technology. This collaboration represents a significant milestone as the first major quantum-focused partnership between Japan and the UK, reflecting a broader commitment to international quantum innovation.
The partnership focuses on integrating Jij’s optimization algorithms with ORCA’s photonic quantum systems, which excel in room-temperature operation without the need for specialized cooling. Targeted applications include logistics, energy grid optimization, and manufacturing processes. ORCA’s expertise in photonic quantum architecture aligns with Jij’s algorithmic innovations to address industrial challenges beyond the capacity of traditional computing methods.
This collaboration is backed by strong national frameworks such as the “Hiroshima Accord,” emphasizing quantum cooperation, and the UK’s leadership in quantum technology standardization through IEC/ISO JTC3. Jij plans to establish a UK subsidiary by spring 2025 to expand its international footprint and deepen its collaboration with ORCA Computing and the UK’s quantum ecosystem.
Executives and government leaders from both countries have expressed optimism about the partnership, citing its potential to accelerate quantum commercialization and enhance international competitiveness in the sector. This initiative underscores the growing momentum in Japan-UK quantum technology partnerships.
