Nu Quantum, a quantum networking company, has announced the launch of Project IDRA in collaboration with the UK National Quantum Computing Centre (NQCC). This project is the first phase of a four-year initiative aimed at building optical network interconnects essential for future quantum computing data centers. Set to be based at the Harwell Campus near Oxford, Project IDRA will develop a groundbreaking optically connected, multi-node distributed quantum computing system.
The project focuses on overcoming key technical challenges associated with scaling quantum computers by networking multiple quantum processing units (QPUs) using quantum entanglement. This technology will allow distant qubits inside different QPUs to act as one larger and more powerful machine, accelerating the development of scalable quantum computing. The NQCC’s participation is supported by the National Security Strategic Investment Fund (NSSIF), positioning the UK as a global leader in large-scale quantum computing.
Nu Quantum is developing the full hardware solution, including high-efficiency qubit-photon interfaces and Quantum Networking Units (QNUs). These components will enable high-rate, low-loss, and high-fidelity quantum networking, pushing entanglement rates and fidelities beyond current academic achievements. The system will be assembled and tested at NQCC’s state-of-the-art facility at Harwell.
Nu Quantum’s CEO, Carmen Palacios, highlighted the importance of this collaboration in advancing quantum computing, noting that the project will help position the UK at the forefront of quantum innovation. NQCC Director Dr. Michael Cuthbert echoed these sentiments, emphasizing that Project IDRA is a significant step towards realizing a quantum data center of the future.
Nu Quantum will also open a second office at the Harwell Innovation Centre, strengthening its ties to the NQCC and further contributing to the growing quantum ecosystem at Harwell.
