Telefonica Germany, in partnership with Amazon Web Services (AWS), is piloting quantum technologies to enhance its mobile network capabilities. This initiative aims to optimize mobile tower placement, implement quantum encryption for network security, and explore quantum-driven innovations for future 6G networks. The collaboration reflects a proactive approach to leveraging quantum technology prototypes in anticipation of their mainstream adoption.

Antia Lamas-Linares, AWS’s principal applied scientist, emphasized the importance of early experimentation with quantum systems to prepare for the technology’s impact. Telefonica Germany’s Chief Technology and Information Officer, Mallik Rao, highlighted the strategic potential of quantum advancements for network performance and security.

Earlier this year, Telefonica Germany began migrating its 5G customers to the AWS cloud, a project that has seen strong performance outcomes. With one million users already on the cloud platform, the company plans to transition an additional three to four million customers over the next 12 to 18 months.

The pilot underscores the increasing interest in quantum technologies among telecom and tech companies, recognizing their potential to revolutionize computational speed, encryption, and future communication networks. This project also supports Telefonica’s broader digital transformation and readiness for next-generation mobile technologies.
