Trapped-ion quantum hardware developer Universal Quantum has announced a major international expansion, establishing its first dedicated R&D Competency Centre outside Europe in Singapore. Backed by an investment exceeding SGD 30 million ($23.73 million USD)—supported directly by venture capital arm EDBI and corporate capital reserves—the facility will serve as the UK-based startup’s Asia-Pacific headquarters and primary hub for advanced ion-trap microchip manufacturing, packaging, and algorithmic co-design.

The strategic expansion is executed in close collaboration with Singapore’s National Quantum Office (NQO), the Economic Development Board (EDB), and EDBI (the investment arm of SG Growth Capital), which has officially joined Universal Quantum as a strategic equity investor. The R&D Competency Centre will launch with an initial team of 25 physicists, semiconductor engineers, and computer scientists, drawing on local fabrication lines housed across the Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR) to advance 300mm wafer processing and micro-assembly for trapped-ion quantum processing units (QPUs).

At the core of the technical roadmap is the integration of Universal Quantum’s electronic quantum chip architecture with Singapore’s advanced semiconductor packaging ecosystem. The program aims to overcome physical interconnection barriers in trapped-ion scaling by producing high-density microchip modules capable of supporting a fully integrated, million-qubit quantum computer. In addition to hardware process development, the facility will design fault-tolerant quantum algorithms tailored to Singapore’s key industrial sectors, including pharmaceuticals, logistics, and material science.

The Singapore expansion builds on Universal Quantum’s European momentum, where it continues executing its landmark €67 million deployment contract with the German Aerospace Center (DLR). Supported by the British High Commission in Singapore, the initiative establishes a bilateral deep-tech corridor between the UK and Singapore, embedding the company within one of Asia’s most aggressively funded national quantum ecosystems.
