SandboxAQ has received a Tactical Funding Increase (TACFI) from the U.S. Air Force (USAF) to advance its AQNav magnetic navigation system. This SBIR Phase 2B funding will enable SandboxAQ and partner AFWERX to develop additional configurations of AQNav, including a pod-based system, for deployment on a broader range of aircraft, including unmanned aerial systems.
AQNav leverages quantum sensors and proprietary AI Large Quantitative Models (LQMs) to deliver a robust navigation solution that is impervious to GPS jamming and spoofing. The system uses data from the Earth’s crustal magnetic field to provide accurate, real-time navigation in all weather conditions, without relying on Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS). This passive technology, which emits no electronic signals, enhances aircraft stealth and is adaptable to various platforms, from single-engine planes to large military transports.
This funding extension follows a previous Direct-to-Phase-II SBIR contract awarded in January 2023. AQNav testing has already completed over 40 sorties and 200 flight hours and has been tested in key USAF exercises: Exercise Golden Phoenix and Exercise Mobility Guardian, demonstrating its reliability and effectiveness. The new contract highlights the USAF’s continued trust in AQNav’s potential to secure tactical air dominance.
A press release provided by SandboxAQ about their contract extension has been posted on their website here. Also, for more information about AQNav, please visit a webpage for the product here and a blog post about their work with the U.S. Air Force here.
