The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga (UTC) has been awarded $3.5 million over four years by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) to fully establish its Quantum Center. This funding will support infrastructure, education, case-driven research, and business development to ensure long-term sustainability.

The Quantum Center will expand UTC’s focus on Quantum Information Science and Engineering (QISE). Planned initiatives include developing quantum sensing, networking, and computing applications in areas such as energy optimization, cybersecurity, and urban mobility systems. Additionally, the Center aims to offer advanced degrees in QISE and enhance K-12 outreach, with a focus on underserved communities. Programs will introduce foundational quantum concepts to teachers and students, bolstering regional talent development.

The infrastructure component leverages UTC’s access to the EPB Quantum Network, the first commercial quantum network in the U.S., while collaboration with Oak Ridge National Laboratory and TVA will explore quantum computing advantages over classical methods in solving complex problems.

UTC Vice Chancellor for Research Reinhold Mann and Chief Technology Officer Dr. Tian Li emphasized the Center’s role in positioning UTC as a quantum technology leader, driving impactful research and workforce development in Tennessee and beyond.
