Public research university Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) has expanded its deep-tech research footprint as Singapore-based startup AQSolotl Pte. Ltd. establishes its research, development, and commercialization (R&D&C) operations at the UTM Technovation Park in Johor Bahru. The deployment establishes AQSolotl as the first quantum computing hardware company operating in Malaysia, anchoring a cross-border regional hardware ecosystem between Malaysia and Singapore.
Spun out of Singapore’s quantum technology ecosystem in collaboration with UTM, AQSolotl focuses on the design, engineering, and commercial production of high-precision quantum computer control electronics. The company’s technology builds upon UTM’s research programs initiated in 2009 alongside Japan’s Osaka University, which subsequently expanded to include Singapore’s Centre for Quantum Technologies (CQT), Nanyang Technological University (NTU), and the National University of Singapore (NUS).

Led co-technically by CTO Dr. Yap Yung Szen—a UTM researcher recognized in UNESCO’s global Quantum 100 initiative—AQSolotl’s physical presence in Johor Bahru leverages the university’s geographic proximity to Singapore to create a talent development and commercialization corridor. The facility will host industrial internships for UTM engineering and physics students while supplying precision control hardware modules to regional research institutions and commercial quantum platforms.
