VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland has initiated a search for an innovation partner to help scale Finland’s next quantum computer to 300 superconducting qubits. This co-development project aims to optimize the quantum computer for solving mathematical problems, particularly in new material development. The Finnish government has pledged financial support for this procurement. The deadline to submit an application for consideration is August 2, 2024 with an anticipated final selection projected to occur after several review phases in early 2025.
Currently, VTT and its current partner, IQM, have developed 5- and 20-qubit quantum computers, with a 50-qubit system set to launch later in 2024. The new tender seeks a partner to enhance these capabilities further. The focus will be on superconducting quantum computers, aligning with VTT’s existing research strengths.
The future partner will need to provide temporary computing services immediately after the project begins. This initiative is expected to bolster Finland’s position in the global quantum technology landscape, fostering innovations in fields such as chemistry and bio-based industries.
