IonQ (NYSE: IONQ), a leader in quantum computing, has signed a $9 million partnership with the University of Maryland (UMD) to strengthen quantum innovation and expand access to QLab, the National Quantum Lab at Maryland. This three year strategic agreement aims to enhance UMD’s position as a global hub for quantum research by offering students, faculty, and partners unprecedented access to IonQ’s cutting-edge trapped ion quantum computers.
UMD, which has been at the forefront of quantum research for over 35 years, is home to 10 quantum-focused centers and more than 200 researchers. The university has produced over 200 annual publications and graduated 100+ quantum-focused PhDs over the last decade. This partnership further cements Maryland’s leadership in quantum technology, fueling economic growth and attracting top talent.
IonQ President and CEO Peter Chapman stated, “This partnership strengthens IonQ’s commitment to the state of Maryland, which has positioned itself as the Capital of Quantum.” UMD President Darryll J. Pines emphasized the university’s role in advancing quantum innovation, highlighting that the collaboration with IonQ will drive breakthroughs across academia, government, and the public sector.
Since its inception, QLab has supported academic research, government collaborations, and initiatives within UMD’s Quantum Startup Foundry and Mid-Atlantic Quantum Alliance. The lab has hosted workshops for NASA and provided access to researchers globally, contributing to the growth of the quantum computing user base and preparing the future workforce.
