Alice & Bob, a quantum computing company specializing in “Cat qubits,” has published its first white paper outlining a five-year roadmap to deliver fault-tolerant quantum computing. The plan, targeting 100 high-fidelity logical qubits by 2030, builds on their proprietary cat qubit technology, designed to reduce quantum errors and improve scalability.
Key Milestones in the Roadmap:
- Master the Cat Qubit: 1 Cat Qubit, 0 Logical Qubits
- Achieved in 2024 with the Boson chip series, this milestone established reliable qubits resistant to bit-flip errors.
- Build a Logical Qubit: 16 Cat Qubits, 1 Logical Qubits, 10-2 Logical Error Rate
- Ongoing work with the Helium chip series aims to create the first error-corrected logical qubit.
- Demonstrate Fault-Tolerant Computing: 48 Cat Qubits, 4 Logical Qubits, 10-3 Logical Error Rate
- The Lithium chip series will support scalable systems and enable error-corrected logical gates.
- Enable Universal Quantum Computing: 250 Cat Qubits, 5 Logical Qubits, 10-4 Logical Error Rate
- Using the Beryllium chip series, Alice & Bob plans to deploy a full set of logical gates with live error correction.
- Achieve Useful Quantum Computing: 2000 Cat Qubits, 100 Logical Qubits, 10-6 Logical Error Rate
- The Graphene chip series, planned for 2030, will integrate 100 logical qubits into high-performance computing systems for industrial applications.
Alice & Bob’s cat qubits stand out due to their active stabilization mechanism, effectively eliminating bit-flip errors. This innovation transforms the traditionally resource-intensive 2D error correction into a simpler 1D problem, requiring fewer resources. The company promises “6-nines” logical qubit fidelity (99.9999%), reducing hardware needs by up to 200 times compared to other methods.
According to CTO Raphael Lescanne, the roadmap reflects Alice & Bob’s commitment to addressing quantum computing’s scalability challenges and providing practical tools for industries like finance, healthcare, and cybersecurity. CEO Théau Peronnin highlighted the transformative potential of their technology to make quantum computing accessible and impactful by the end of the decade.
