Quantum Synergy: Enabling Groundbreaking Research in National Labs with Quantum Computers

2024-08-27T22:06:21-07:00

By Pedro Lopes, QuEra Computing U.S. Department of Energy National Laboratories National laboratories have long been at the forefront of scientific and technological innovation, playing a crucial role in accelerating progress. Their infrastructure, established during the Second World War and continuously evolving since, has enabled significant discoveries in areas such as nuclear energy, weather forecasting (including climate change), and materials development for battery and carbon capture technologies, addressing pressing challenges faced by humanity. From their inception, national labs have recognized the importance of high-performance computing. They were early adopters of supercomputing technologies that emerged in the 1960s and 1970s, positioning them [...]

Colorado To Be Awarded U.S. Tech Hub Funding for Quantum Technology as Part of the U.S. Chips and Science Act

2024-08-27T22:06:22-07:00

As part of the U.S. Chips and Science Act signed in August 2022, $10 billion was allocated for programs that extend from Fiscal Year 2023 through Fiscal Year 2027 to create 20 geographically distributed regional technology and innovation hubs. Colorado will be announced as one of the 20 recipients for quantum technology. The twenty recipients of Tech Hub awards were selected from a total of 192 applications in 10 different categories. As an initial step, the Colorado Tech Hub will receive a planning grant of up to $500,000 and subsequently be able to apply for an implementation grant of $50 to [...]

Quantum Machines Announces QBoard-II, an Improved Cryogenic Sample Holder

2024-08-27T22:06:23-07:00

Quantum Machines has introduced a next generation modular, PCB-based cryogenic sample holder as a follow-on to the original QBoard sample holder introduced by its QDevil subsidiary in 2020. This new sample holder improves upon the previous generation with more compact dimensions, new PCB, interposer, and daughterboard designs, and the addition of a shielding lid for better signal integrity and radiation protection. It includes connectors that can support RF signals as high as 8 Ghz as well as a number of lines for DC. The product is targeted for use by experimenters working with low-temperature spin-qubit chips, superconducting circuits, and general transport [...]

PASQAL and Partners to Research a New Type of Photonic Quantum Computer in a Program Funded by the European Innovation Council

2024-08-27T22:06:24-07:00

PASQAL along with its partners at Sorbonne Université, Pixel Photonics GmbH (PIX), The Institute of Photonic Sciences (ICFO), and Institut d'Optique Théorique et Appliquée (IOTA) have received a four year grant to research a new type of photonic quantum computer funded by the Pathfinder-2023 challenge grant of the European Innovation. Council. This photonic based processor would be completely different from the ones currently being developed by companies such as PsiQuantum and Xanadu because it leverages some of the technology, such as optical tweezers and neutral atoms, that PASQAL has developed for its standard neutral atom computers. It also works significantly different [...]

POLARISqb Receives DARPA IMPAQT Funding for Quantum-based Drug Design

2024-08-27T22:06:25-07:00

By Carolyn Mathas POLARISqb just received a Defense Advanced Research Project Agency (DARPA) award supporting the  use of quantum computers to design drugs. The research contract is part of DARPA’s Imagining Practical Applications for a Quantum Tomorrow (IMPAQT) program. In the three years that the company has tackled the challenges of molecule identification for drug design, they’ve achieved two important firsts: successfully building the first drug discovery pipeline using a quantum computer, and releasing the first ever quantum computing powered software-as-a-service (SaaS) for drug discovery, subscription-based Quantum-Aided Drug Design (QuADD). The DARPA-funded project,  “Quantum Computing Solutions for Inhibiting Protein-Protein Interactions for Emerging [...]

2024-08-27T22:06:28-07:00

The $1.2 billion U.S. National Quantum Initiative (NQI) was enacted in December 2018 for a ten year period with budget authorizations for science activities specified only for the first five fiscal years which ended on September 30, 2023. Although the U.S. Congress has a lot of issues to work through first, like the full government's budget for FY2024, we do expect that will be get around to renewing the NQI in one form or another later this year. Support for quantum technology is one issue that carries support from both sides of the political aisle.  The House Committee on Science, Space, and Technology [...]
