Platform for Digital and Quantum Innovation (PINQ2) is a non-profit organization initiated by the University of Sherbrooke and the Canadian Ministry of Economy and Innovation to provide companies in Quebec, Canada with technical expertise and IT infrastructure to accelerate their digital transformation. The University of Sussex will start offering an online Masters in Quantum Technology Applications and Management which will be the first fully online version available in the UK and possibly worldwide. The program will combine scientific theory with practical business skills and is aimed at professionals who are looking to advance their scientific knowledge to conduct research, commercialize a quantum technologies and set up or manage a quantum division within their company, or to develop their quantum literacy to more effectively support colleagues in quantum-focused roles. The Wallenberg Centre for Quantum Technology (WACQT) at Chalmers University has developed a 25 qubit quantum processor which they are using and experimenting with internally. However, it is not available for use by external users in industry because the Chalmers researchers are constantly working with it. To solve this problem, the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation will be providing Chalmers with a grant of 102 Million Krona to build a second processor and make it available to other users in Sweden over the cloud. Announced during a visit to Xanadu by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, the investment will help the company build and commercialize a photonic-based, fault-tolerant quantum computer. The investment is part of the Canadian Quantum Strategy that we reported on earlier this month. Almost half of the $360 million CAD budgeted for that program is intended for commercialization. Quantum Machines has disclosed they have received another $20 million in funding late last year. This funding was added to the $50 million Series B funding that the company originally announced in 2021 and it brings total company funding to $100 million. The company is not disclosing the names of the investors for these additional funds, but did indicate that it includes both new and existing investors. Pennylane is a Python-based open-source software framework that provides algorithm libraries for applications including quantum machine learning, quantum chemistry, and quantum computing. It is hardware agnostic and supports many different quantum hardware backends. Xanadu and Rolls-Royce will be working together to develop new functionality that supports a new algorithm for Pennylane called the Quantum Singular Value Transformation (QSVT).
