Chungbuk National University (CBNU) will install its first full-stack quantum computer, the IQM Spark, on campus in early 2025. This marks the first commercial quantum computer procured through South Korea’s government system and IQM’s second deployment in the Asia-Pacific region. The 5-qubit system will support CBNU’s ChungBuk Quantum Research Center (CBQRC) in advancing quantum research, education, and workforce training.

The initiative, backed by the Chungbuk Provincial Government, aims to foster collaboration between South Korea and Finland, aligning with national goals to boost quantum technology expertise. Professor Kiwoong Kim, Director of CBQRC, views the project as a catalyst for cross-border innovation and industrialization of quantum technologies.

IQM’s system will provide on-site access for students and researchers, equipping them with practical quantum computing experience. This deployment complements IQM’s global fleet, which includes installations in the U.S., Europe, and elsewhere in APAC. Dr. Mikko Välimäki, IQM’s Co-CEO, highlighted the strategic value of the installation in preparing future quantum professionals while offering flexibility and control over system use.

This development emphasizes South Korea’s growing role in quantum research and aligns with its broader efforts to strengthen quantum education and industrial capabilities.
