VTT’s Five Qubit Quantum Computer is Now Operational

2022-08-15T22:18:46-07:00

We reported last year that VTT had selected IQM to provide the country's first quantum computer. The program has started with a five qubit machine which is now in operation at located at Micronova, a national research infrastructure for micro and nanotechnology jointly run by VTT and Aalto University. A 20 qubit machine is expected to be installed in the next couple of years with a larger 50 qubit computer slated to be ready by 2024. VTT will be using this machine for their own research as well as a teaching tool for students at Aalto University. Currently, the machine is [...]

Research Roundup for March 2021

2021-12-31T15:26:23-08:00

By Dr. Chris Mansell Shown below are summaries of a few interesting research papers related to quantum computing that have been published over the past month. Title: High-fidelity laser-free universal control of two trapped ion qubitsOrganization: NIST and othersIon trap quantum computers employing lasers have the highest fidelity logic gates out of all the experimental platforms currently available and arguably have more concrete plans for scalability than their competitors. In this work, microwave technology initially developed for wireless communication is used to perform laser-free logic gates with just as high fidelity. By removing the challenges involved with aligning large numbers of [...]

Research Roundup for January 2021

2021-12-31T15:21:14-08:00

By Dr. Chris Mansell Shown below are summaries of a few interesting research papers related to quantum computing that have been published over the past month. Title: Model-free readout-error mitigation for quantum expectation valuesOrganization: IBMThe paper proposes an efficient way to mitigate the readout errors that occur when the final measurements of a quantum computation are Pauli measurements. Simulations of the proposed mitigation strategy showed that more accurate expectation values could be obtained even when the readout noise was correlated. You can view the paper published on arXiv here. https://arxiv.org/abs/2012.09738 Title: Quantum-accelerated multilevel Monte Carlo methods for stochastic differential equations in [...]

Quantum Computing Outlook for 2020

2020-12-30T15:38:55-08:00

The year 2019 was a busy year in the quantum community with a lot of new developments and announcements.  We are sure that 2020 will be just as busy, if not more so, and expect continued advances.  We have seen some of the roadmaps that folks in the industry have discussed so with our intrepid 20/20 vision (pardon the pun!) we will describe some of the developments that we expect to see this year. Hardware Hardware providers will continue to make advances in both qubit count, qubit quality and new technologies in 2020.  Things we expect to see include: In September [...]

Review of the Cirq Quantum Software Framework

2020-11-11T09:21:50-08:00

Practical Quantum Computing with Cirq Ryan LaRose Department of Computational Mathematics, Science, and Engineering, Michigan State University Department of Physics and Astronomy, Michigan State University Abstract In July 2018, the Quantum Computing Report published an in-depth analysis of four major gate-model quantum software platforms: Forest by Rigetti, QISKit by IBM, ProjectQ by ETH Zurich, and the Quantum Developer Kit by Microsoft. Shortly after, Google announced the release of their own quantum software platform: Cirq. In this paper, we provide an overview and comparative analysis of this newly-released platform with respect to the previously-reviewed quantum software platforms. Our analysis proceeds [...]
