IQM Receives a €35 Million ($36.7M USD) Loan for Its Quantum Fabrication Facility

2023-05-09T13:13:20-07:00

The loan was provided to IQM by the European Investment Bank (EIB) to expanding the fabrication facility that they announced last November and to accelerate material research and development of quantum processors. The facility, located in Espoo, Finland, will be Europe’s first quantum-dedicated fabrication and help reduce Europe's dependency on chips fabricated in Asia. IQM received additional help from EIB Advisory Services support prepare the financing application. IQM had won a contract in November 2020 to deliver a series of superconducting based quantum computers to VTT, a government owned research center in Finland and has already delivered the 5 qubit version. They are working [...]

Atos/IQM HPC Center Survey Shows Broad Interest in Quantum Computing

2022-08-15T22:18:54-07:00

Atos and IQM commissioned a study of 110 high-performance computing (HPC) centers worldwide to gauge their interest in quantum computing and obtained interesting results. Twenty-seven percent (27%) of these centers indicated they are already experimenting with quantum computing, 76% of the centers indicated they expect to be utilizing quantum computing technologies by 2023, and by 2026, a very surprising 71% of HPC centers indicate they expect to be utilizing a quantum computer with either an on-premise or mixed infrastructure for quantum computing. The remainder of the HPC centers in 2026 still anticipate they will be using a cloud-based approach. Here are some [...]

IQM Quantum Computer Selected for Integration as an Accelerator for an HPC System in Germany’s Q-Exa Project

2022-08-15T22:19:00-07:00

The IQM superconducting quantum computer will be integrated within a high performance computing (HPC) installation at the Leibniz Supercomputing Centre (LRZ) near Munich. Other partners in this activity include Atos, Europe's leading HPC company, and HQS, a quantum software startup company. Q-Exa is a €45.3 million ($51M USD) consortium project with major funding from the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) that will research making quantum acceleration of HPC applications a reality. More about the Q-Exa project and integration of IQM's quantum computing can be found in a news release available here. November 15, 2021

IQM Sets Up a Subsidiary in Spain as a Quantum Finance Co-Design Hub

2022-08-15T22:20:45-07:00

IQM Processor Example IQM has a different commercialization strategy than most of the other quantum hardware companies. They are focusing on application specific processors co-designed with the software applications in mind to provide the optimal solution for that application. In addition, they are focusing on provide quantum computers for on-premise installations primarily for European customers instead of remote use over the cloud. They feel that this approach will allow them to provide better solutions for customers versus general purpose quantum computers that must be accessed over the internet to a cloud installation that may be far away. The types of customization [...]

IQM Releases an Open Source Superconducting Quantum Chip Design Tool

2021-12-31T15:25:07-08:00

The tool, called KQCircuits is an open source Python library jointly developed by Aalto University and IQM that provides a graphics based tool that helps one to design their own quantum processing chip. It appears to be similar to a tool that IBM announced called Qiskit Metal that we described in an article last March. The program allows a user to create their own circuit elements, assemble the circuit elements into a complete design, generate mask layouts, and export files so the design can be simulated either in SPICE (an analog electronic circuit simulator) or finite element modelling (FEM) software such [...]
