The funding was led by World Fund with additional participation from Bayern Kapital, EIC Fund, OurCrowd, QCI SPV, Tofino and Varma, as well as existing investors Maki.vc, Matadero QED, MIG Fonds, OpenOcean, Salvia GmbH, Santo Venture Capital GmbH, Tencent, Tesi, and Vsquared. IQM Receives a €35 Million ($36.7M USD) Loan for Its Quantum Fabrication Facility

The loan was provided to IQM by the European Investment Bank (EIB) to expanding the fabrication facility that they announced last November and to accelerate material research and development of quantum processors. The facility, located in Espoo, Finland, will be Europe’s first quantum-dedicated fabrication and help reduce Europe's dependency on chips fabricated in Asia. Rigetti Computing has appointed Michael Harburn as Chief Technical Officer. Mr. Harburn joined the company in 2018 and previously served as their Senior Vice President, Fabrication Operations and QPU Engineering. The new office will be located in Paris and will be the fourth European office for IQM, joining other offices in Bilbao, Spain, Munich, German, and Espoo, Finland. Atos/IQM HPC Center Survey Shows Broad Interest in Quantum Computing

Atos and IQM commissioned a study of 110 high-performance computing (HPC) centers worldwide to gauge their interest in quantum computing and obtained interesting results. Twenty-seven percent (27%) of these centers indicated they are already experimenting with quantum computing, 76% of the centers indicated they expect to be utilizing quantum computing technologies by 2023, and by 2026, a very surprising 71% of HPC centers indicate they expect to be utilizing a quantum computer with either an on-premise or mixed infrastructure for quantum computing. IQM Quantum Computer Selected for Integration as an Accelerator for an HPC System in Germany’s Q-Exa Project

The IQM superconducting quantum computer will be integrated within a high performance computing (HPC) installation at the Leibniz Supercomputing Centre (LRZ) near Munich. Other partners in this activity include Atos, Europe's leading HPC company, and HQS, a quantum software startup company. Q-Exa is a €45.3 million ($51M USD) consortium project with major funding from the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) that will research making quantum acceleration of HPC applications a reality. IQM, a superconducting quantum processor startup headquartered in Espoo, Finland, has opened a dedicated fabrication facility in Espoo, Finland. The size of this Class 100 facility is 560 square meters (about 4000 square feet) and will cost about € 20 million ($22.9M USD). The funding was provided by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research, abbreviated BMBF. Besides IQM additional participants include ParityQC, Infineon, Forschungszentrum Jülich, Leibniz Supercomputing Center, and Freie Universität Berlin. The project, codenamed DAQC (Digital-Analog Quantum Computer) will develop a 54 qubit quantum processor over a four year period. Although IQM is headquartered in Finland, in March 2020 they established a subsidiary in Munich, Germany as a co-design hub to tighten the interaction between quantum hardware and quantum software development.
